A RESOLUTION adopting the City of Seattle Privacy Principles governing the City's operations, which will provide an ethical framework for dealing with current and future technologies that impact privacy, and setting timelines for future reporting on the development of a Privacy Statement and Privacy Toolkit for their implementation.

WHEREAS, advances in the use of information technologies in administration, law enforcement, and communications lead to the potential for increased data collection; and
WHEREAS, protecting the privacy of individuals interacting with City government is essential to maintaining the public's trust; and
WHEREAS, a number of advocates, academics, professionals, and public-sector leaders called upon the City to undertake a review of the City's privacy practices and to develop a City-wide privacy policy and means for ensuring compliance; and
WHEREAS, the City aspires to provide leadership for other cities dealing with privacy concerns; and
WHEREAS, a City-wide Interdepartmental Team (IDT) sponsored by the Department of Information Technology (DoIT) and Seattle Police Department (SPD), and comprised of departmental representatives from Seattle City Light, Seattle Fire Department, Law Department, Seattle Library, Records Administration, Seattle Department of Transportation, Department of Neighborhoods, and Seattle Parks and Recreation and was formed to examine leading City data practices and commitments necessary to build public trust in those practices, and
WHEREAS, a Privacy Advisory Committee comprised of academics, practitioners, lawyers, and community advocates has been convened to provide outside expertise and advice to the City's effort; NOW, THEREFORE,
