A RESOLUTION providing an honorary designation of South Jackson Street from 20th Avenue South to 23rd Avenue South as “Ernestine Anderson Way.”

WHEREAS, Ernestine Anderson was a legendary American jazz and blues singer from Seattle’s Central Area and a graduate of Garfield High School; and
WHEREAS, Ernestine Anderson’s prolific career spanned more than five decades, which included recording over 30 albums; and
WHEREAS, Ernestine Anderson was nominated four times for a Grammy Award and performed at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Monterey Jazz Festival, and countless other jazz festivals around the world; and
WHEREAS, Ernestine Anderson’s creative talents and musical accomplishments helped shape the Seattle music scene; and
WHEREAS, Ernestine Anderson Place was recently constructed in 2012 on South Jackson Street between 20th Ave South and 20th Place South to house and serve homeless and low-income seniors 55 and older in the Central Area neighborhood; and
WHEREAS, Ernestine Anderson’s successful career will continue to inspire new generations of musicians in Seattle and around the world; NOW THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE, THE MAYOR CONCURRING, THAT:
Section 1. South Jackson Street between 20th Avenue South and 23rd Avenue South shall have an honorary designation as "Ernestine Anderson Way."
Section 2. The Council requests that the Seattle Department of Transportation manufacture, install, and maintain honorary signs at the intersections of South Jackson Street and 20th Avenue South, South Jackson Street and 20th Place South, South Jackson Street and 22nd Avenue South, and South Jackson Street and 23rd Avenue South, which shall reflect the “Ernestine Anderson Way” honorary designation.
Section 3. By this resolution, the Council does not intend to affect any existing or future signage that reflects the honorary designation of “Ernestine Anderson Way” with the exception of the signs described in Section 2 of this resolution.
