A RESOLUTION in support of the bid by The City of Seattle to host the National League of Cities 2021 or 2024 City Summit conference.

WHEREAS, the National League of Cities (NLC) is the country’s oldest, largest, and most representative organization serving municipal governments, with a mission “to strengthen and promote cities as centers of opportunity, leadership, and governance”; and

WHEREAS, The City of Seattle is a longtime and active member of the NLC and supports the goals of the NLC; and

WHEREAS, the City Summit is the NLC’s annual education, training, and governance conference that is held in a different city every year in November; and

WHEREAS, the NLC is seeking bids to host its City Summits in 2021 and 2024; and

WHEREAS, Seattle is a dynamic and lively city, offering some of the nation’s top restaurants, famous attractions such as the Space Needle and Pike Place Market, and a vibrant sports, music, and arts scene to entertain and delight attendees and guests of the City Summit; and

WHEREAS, Seattle is home to both globally recognized corporations and small businesses, boasting the University of Washington, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and other leading research and philanthropic institutions; and

WHEREAS, Seattle is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States and is experiencing investments in public amenities and infrastructure, including extension of Sound Transit’s Link Light Rail service, expansion of the Washington State Convention Center, and development of a new Waterfront Park to reconnect the city to Elliott Bay; and

WHEREAS, Seattle is a Welcoming City, supporting policies and services that include all residents regardless of immigration status, ancestry, race, ethnicity, national origin, color, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender variance, marital status, physical or mental disability, or religion, and encouraging guests of all backgrounds and identities to visit Seattle; and

WHEREAS, The City of Seattle would like to encourage the NLC to select Seattle as its choice for its 2021 or 2024 City Summit, and the Mayor and City Council intend to officially invite the NLC to Seattle by declaring their support for the City’s bid to host the City Summit in 2021 or 2024; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE, THE MAYOR CONCURRING, THAT:

Section 1. The Mayor and City Council support the City’s bid to host the National League of Cities (NLC) 2021 or 2024 City Summit and invite the NLC to conduct a site visit to Seattle in preparation for selecting its host cities for the 2021 and 2024 City Summits.

Section 2. Upon passage of this resolution, the Mayor will submit the  letter attached to this resolution as Attachment 1 to the NLC notifying the organization that Seattle is very interested in hosting one of these events.
