A RESOLUTION recognizing Denny Blaine Park as a site of historic significance to Seattle’s LGBTQ+ community and supporting efforts to preserve and interpret its cultural heritage.

WHEREAS, Denny Blaine Park has served as a public gathering space since the early 20th century and remains part of Seattle’s historic Olmsted park system; and
WHEREAS, the park is part of Seattle’s Olmsted legacy and contributes to the network of historic public landscapes that shape the character of the city’s neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, Denny Blaine Park has, for over 50 years, served as an affirming and meaningful gathering place for LGBTQ+ individuals and communities in Seattle, supporting visibility, community-building, and cultural expression; and
WHEREAS, in recent years the park has become an especially important and affirming public space for Seattle’s transgender and gender-diverse community members, who have found connection, safety, and belonging there; and
WHEREAS, the Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation recently granted historic recognition to Denny Blaine Park in acknowledgment of its significance within LGBTQ+ history, marking the first time an LGBTQ-related site was explicitly referenced in a historic application of this kind; and
WHEREAS, community members, including Friends of Denny Blaine, continue to document and steward the park’s cultural and historic importance; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE, THE MAYOR CONCURRING, THAT:
Section 1. The City of Seattle formally recognizes Denny Blaine Park as a site of historic and cultural importance to Seattle’s LGBTQ+ community, including its significance as an affirming space for transgender and gender-diverse residents.
