A RESOLUTION expressing support by The City of Seattle for all workers, including musicians, to exercise their right to negotiate fair contracts, to establish equitable business relationships, and to benefit from enforceable contract standards.

WHEREAS, professional musicians are entitled to working conditions based upon fair and equitable business relationships, enforceable contract standards, mutual respect, and transparent accountability between musicians and the venue in which they work; and
WHEREAS, musicians are entitled to written agreements specifying the method and timing of payments, fair cancellation policies, merchandising and recording rights, responsibility for promotional efforts, and transparency and accountability on income and expenses; and
WHEREAS, it is in the best interests of musicians, venues and the public that such agreements include methods for assuring compliance with terms of the agreement and means to resolve disputes; and
WHEREAS, Seattle is recognized worldwide as a vibrant City of Music and considers the fair treatment of its working musicians a top priority; and
WHEREAS, Fair Trade Music Seattle, with the support of the Musicians Association of Seattle and the American Federation of Musicians Local 76-493, is uniting musicians to promote these values; and
WHEREAS, Fair Trade Music Seattle has signed mutual pledges with various music venues to establish and maintain fair, equitable, transparent, and mutually accountable relationships with musicians; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE, THE MAYOR CONCURRING, THAT:
      Section 1. The City Council and the Mayor of Seattle reaffirm their support for all workers, including musicians, having the right to negotiate fair contracts, establish equitable business relationships, and abide by enforceable standards.
Section 2. The City of Seattle and the Mayor of Seattle are committed to encouraging musicians and music venues to work together to make Seattle a place where all workers are paid for their labor and have the ability to assure compliance with labor agreements.
Section 3. The City of Seattle and the Mayor of Seattle declare May 20, 2015, as Fair Trade Music Day in Seattle.
