A RESOLUTION providing an honorary designation of South Mount Baker Boulevard between 31st Avenue South and 32nd Avenue South as "Cheryl Chow Boulevard."

WHEREAS Cheryl Chow's steadfast dedication to children and families of Seattle reaches back to the 1970's, beginning with a career in Seattle Public Schools that would span over four decades; and
WHEREAS Cheryl spent 40 years mentoring thousands of girls and young women in leadership and Chinese culture in the historic and award-winning Seattle Chinese Girls Drill team, bringing girls from around the city and region together every spring and summer; and
WHEREAS Cheryl volunteered as a basketball coach for 30 years, helping to create a safe and welcoming space for Asian youth to embrace athletics and learn teamwork and sportsmanship through the Seattle Chinese Athletic Association and Seattle Parks and Recreation; and
WHEREAS Cheryl served two terms as a City Council member in the 1990s, and was instrumental in expanding community centers, creating Urban Rest stops to aid the unhoused, and developing partnerships to address gang and crime in South Seattle communities; and
WHEREAS Cheryl was proud to be a Franklin Quaker (Class of 1964), and served on the Seattle School Board as an unapologetic champion of public education; and
WHEREAS, in her last days, Cheryl spoke up and came out as a member of Seattle's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA+) community, hoping to help younger Asian Americans feel comfortable in their own bodies; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE, THE MAYOR CONCURRING, THAT:
Section 1. South Mount Baker Boulevard between 31st Avenue South and 32nd Avenue South shall have an honorary designation as "Cheryl Chow Boulevard."
