AN ORDINANCE relating to the 2012 Seattle Fire Code as adopted by Section 22.600.020 of the Seattle Municipal Code; amending and adding provisions to the Fire Code related to emergency responder radio coverage in existing high-rise buildings, all as regulated and allowed by the State Building Code Act, Chapter 19.27 of the Revised Code of Washington.

WHEREAS, the Seattle Fire Department and the Seattle Fire Code Advisory Board have reviewed and approved the additions and revisions to the 2012 Seattle Fire Code contained herein; and
WHEREAS, reliable communications are essential for fire fighters and police officers responding to emergencies; and
WHEREAS, The City of Seattle intends to require compliance with emergency responder radio coverage requirements in the fire code while providing building owners an appropriate period of time to achieve compliance; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY OF SEATTLE AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. Section 1103.2 of the 2012 Seattle Fire Code, as adopted by Section 22.600.020 of the Seattle Municipal Code, is amended as follows:
1103.2 Emergency responder radio coverage in existing high-rise buildings. Existing high-rise buildings that do not have a wired communication system or approved radio coverage for emergency responders within the building shall be equipped with such system or coverage within ((two)) four years from the effective date of the adoption of this code:
Exception:
1. A wired communication system in accordance with Section 907.2.13.2 may be provided in lieu of an approved radio coverage system.
2. Buildings and areas of buildings that have minimum radio coverage signal strength levels of the King County Regional 800 MHz Radio System within the building in accordance with Section 510.4.1 without the use of a radio coverage system.
