A RESOLUTION providing an honorary designation of 15th Avenue South from South Nevada Street to South Columbian Way as "Alan Sugiyama Way."

WHEREAS, Alan Sugiyama was a life-long Seattle resident, living over 40 years in the Beacon Hill neighborhood; and
WHEREAS, Alan Sugiyama co-founded the Asian Family Affair newspaper in 1972 and promoted Asian American history throughout the 1970s. His work helped to end misrepresentation of Asian Americans in the media; and
WHEREAS, in 1979 Alan Sugiyama established the Center for Career Alternatives (CCA); and
WHEREAS, for 30 years, Alan Sugiyama's work as executive director for CCA helped to create and foster spaces where disadvantaged adults and youth in King and Snohomish counties can go for free education, employment, and career training; and
WHEREAS, in 1989, Alan Sugiyama was the first Asian American elected to the Seattle School Board where he served two terms, advocated for educational equity, and honorably served as President of the Seattle School Board; and
WHEREAS, notable among Alan Sugiyama's many accomplishments was his work to successfully turn high-risk youth towards high-demand occupations. He did so by exploring new innovative paths to provide youth offenders, many of them chemically dependent, with employment and training alternatives to traditional punitive measures; and
WHEREAS, Alan Sugiyama was regionally and nationally respected for his integrity, courage, and tireless commitment to our youth and our community; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE, THE MAYOR CONCURRING, THAT:
Section 1. 15th Avenue South between South Nevada Street and South Columbian Way shall have an honorary designation as "Alan Sugiyama Way."
