A RESOLUTION relating to the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games; and sponsoring the Games.

WHEREAS, Special Olympics is the world’s largest sports organization for people with intellectual disabilities; and
WHEREAS, Seattle will be hosting the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games in Seattle July 1 through July 6, 2018, with the support of community leaders and corporate partners; and
WHEREAS, approximately 3,000 athletes will be competing in activities and sports at venues around the City, such as the University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Seattle Center, Westlake Park, Safeco Field, and Lake Union Park; and
WHEREAS, tens of thousands of spectators and volunteers are anticipated to attend the games; and
WHEREAS, The City of Seattle is proud to host an event that showcases the abilities of athletes with intellectual disabilities; and
WHEREAS, Seattle is committed to being a city of diversity and inclusion, and is honored to be a part of a celebration to break down barriers and promote inclusion; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE, THE MAYOR CONCURRING, THAT:
Section 1. The City of Seattle will be a sponsor of the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games by contributing $30,000.
Section 2. The City Council directs all departments providing staffing or charging fees for the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games to submit a report no later than August 10, 2018 to the Chair of the Gender Equity, Safe Communities, New Americans, and Education Committee detailing the fees calculated and costs recovered, including but not limited to: staff time, material costs, and fees waived.
