AN ORDINANCE relating to Seattle Parks and Recreation; authorizing the acceptance of a gift of three art pieces, and art tiles entitled “Explorer Voyage,” from the Friends of Christie Park to be installed in Christie Park for public use.

WHEREAS, the Friends of Christie Park, a group of Taiwanese-Americans providing support to the redevelopment of Christie Park, located at 817 NE 43rd Street, has offered to donate art work entitled “Explorer Voyage,” featuring three boat art pieces and art tiles, for installation in a newly constructed plaza in the park as part of the Christie Park Addition Development Project; and

WHEREAS, this gift to The City of Seattle celebrates the explorer spirit and friendship between the people of Seattle and Taiwan, connected across the Pacific Ocean; and

WHEREAS, the boats also reflect the explorer spirit of James Christie, the park’s namesake, and college students from the University of Washington, located near the park, and the university’s strong rowing culture and history; and

WHEREAS, Seattle Parks and Recreation has been collaborating with the Friends of Christie Park and the community during the public process and public meetings associated with the Christie Park Addition Development Project; and

WHEREAS, the sculptures, consisting of three fabricated steel boats with wood slating for bench seating designed by artist Paul Sorey, are inspired by Taiwanese tribal boats from Orchid Island and the art tiles represent native Taiwanese boat culture; and

WHEREAS, the nonprofit U District Partnership is the fiscal sponsor for the funding associated with the donation and its maintenance funding, and Friends of Christie Park is the working lead on the design, manufacturing, and installation of the artwork as part of the Christie Park Addition Development Project slated for construction in the fall of 2019; and

WHEREAS, it is the intent of Seattle Parks and Recreation to accept the donation of and accept full ownership of, and all rights and interests to, the donated “Explorer Voyage” art; and

WHEREAS, this donation includes a $6,000 endowment for maintenance of the art piece; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY OF SEATTLE AS FOLLOWS:

Section 1. The Superintendent of Parks and Recreation (“Superintendent”), or the Superintendent’s designee, is authorized, on behalf of The City of Seattle (“City”), to accept the “Explorer Voyage” donation.

Section 2. Upon completion of construction to the Superintendent’s satisfaction, the Superintendent is authorized to accept the gift of the “Explorer Voyage” artwork on behalf of the City.

 

Section 3. This ordinance shall take effect and be in force 30 days after its approval by the Mayor, but if not approved and returned by the Mayor within 10 days after presentation, it shall take effect as provided by Seattle Municipal Code Section 1.04.020.
