A RESOLUTION providing an honorary designation of S Oregon St between Martin Luther King, Jr Way and 31st Ave S as "Bill Burton Way."

WHEREAS, Bill Burton's vision and commitment was a driving force in expanding the Rainier Vista Club into the impressive community hub and "second home" to so many youth that exists today; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Burton became the Area Director for the Rainier Vista Boys & Girls Club in 1980 and showed a fierce determination to empower local youth and build their confidence to thrive in all aspects of life; and
WHEREAS, over the next twenty-plus years, Mr. Burton has worked tirelessly to build up the once humble and neglected Club into a sprawling state of the art community center; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Burton's efforts have allowed the Rainier Vista Club to grow into a destination that welcomes over 100 youth from the neighborhood every day in a wide range of programs; and
WHEREAS, the positive mentorship he championed at the Club allows members to build relationships and unlock the gifts and passions they'll use to change the world; and
WHEREAS, The City of Seattle recognizes the leadership and significance of Bill Burton's work and expresses its appreciation for the contributions to the community; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE, THE MAYOR CONCURRING, THAT:
Section 1. S Oregon St between Martin Luther King, Jr Way and 31st Ave S shall have an honorary designation as "Bill Burton Way."
Section 2. The Council requests that the Seattle Department of Transportation manufacture, install, and maintain an honorary sign at the northeast corner of S Oregon St and Martin Luther King, Jr Way, which shall reflect the "Bill Burton Way" honorary designation.
